Financial Outlook Reporting Tool (FORT)

FORT is a web-based financial reconciliation and projection tool built specifically for sponsored research administrators at Emory.

Users are able to enter the name or EMPLID of a faculty member that they support and FORT pulls that faculty member’s entire sponsored research portfolio including any awards which they are designated as the PI or MPI, and any sponsored projects that they have been assigned via the Account Administrator tool in Compass.

It gives summaries both at the award and project levels, as well as detailed trend reports at the project/activity level with editable automated salary projections based on the earnings distribution data from the Peoplesoft HR system.

Users are also able to enter manual projections for non-personnel expenses for current or future months.  Users can upload their manually entered projections and/or notes to the FORT server to ensure continuity of service for their PIs.

FORT Upgrade is here!

We are excited to announce a major upgrade to the (FORT) Financial Outlook Reporting Tool! The FORT is being migrated to the web and will soon be available to use online.

  • Instead of using Excel to access FORT, users will access FORT via any web browser
  • Minimal changes have been made to the look and feel – the web version still looks like an Excel document
  • New functionality includes:
    • A Search Menu for PIs
    • An option to open up to five Projects at one time

  • Improved performance – the web version will run faster and not require any support from local IT
  • Improved security – users will now log in using their Emory NetID and passwords

In Summer 2016, the Office of Finance Systems and Data Analytics (OFSDA) was engaged by the RAS leadership, the RAS unit Chief Business Officers, the RAS Task Force (representing the University Faculty Council (UFC)) and the School of Medicine Business & Finance leadership to consider ways to address inefficiencies in data access, reporting and projections.

As a result of the feedback obtained from working sessions with RAS Task Force representatives and other faculty, OFSDA agreed to focus on three areas:
  1. The development of a consolidated financial view for faculty with minimal clicks and a focus on what faculty need to know
  2. The reduction of manually intensive tasks on RAS staff to allow them additional capacity to support faculty
  3. Improved metrics to track accountability in meeting agreed-upon services for faculty.

In 2023 we transitioned to a cloud server and the tool moved from desktop based to web based. This transition allowed for faster loading times, easier accessibility and no longer requires VPN connection.
